Jim Butcher Biography

Jim Butcher was born in Independence, Missouri, on October 26, 1971. He was the youngest of three children and had two older sisters. During a bout of strep throat as a child, his sisters introduced young Butcher to The Lord of the Rings and The Han Solo Adventures. His initiation into fantasy and science fiction would inspire the aspiring writer to tell his own stories.

Jim Butcher’s Writing

From an early age, Jim Butcher had aspirations to become a writer. At 19, the author wrote his first novel, however, in his own words: ‘It was terrible. Really bad.’ He would try his hand at writing two more books in the fantasy genre but could not find any publishers interested in his texts. Even after rewriting his first novel, Butcher struggled to find an audience. However, he was exercising his writing abilities.

The Dresden Files, Jim Butcher

Butcher would finally find literary success in 1996. A writing class exercise inspired the author’s idea for The Dresden Files and the story of Harry Dresden, a professional wizard living in contemporary Chicago. Jim Butcher’s unique style, mixing sci-fi and fantasy, first manifested in Storm Front, the premiere novel of an ongoing series. He looked for a publishing house for his manuscript for two years before it was finally printed in 2000. 

The Dresden Files series would grow to include 17 novels and is still ongoing. Butcher’s property has also been adapted to television. In addition, Jim Butcher also created the Codex Alera series. Starting in 2004 with the publication of Furies of Calderon, the collection would include six novels.
